With the cost of care under greater scrutiny than ever before, it’s increasingly crucial that doctors can perform procedures as quickly and easily as safely possible. In the case of vascular implants, that means the doctor has to be able to clearly see a stent’s position and orientation.
Isoflux Biomed, the world leader in cylind rical magnetron sputtering (the coating method of choice for this type of application), came to VPT for a highly specialized coating solution. They needed a high-volume system that would put a radiopague (visible under X-ray), bio-compatible metal coating on batches of stents, without affecting the stents’ mechanical and elastic properties.
We developed an easy to use, highly reliable coating system that would incorporate the Isoflux patented cylindrical cathode and process recipe. To achieve the film characteristics required by stent manufacturers, our system precisely controls the entire process, from vacuum levels to cathode parameters to gas flows. Though the process is incredibly complex and demanding, the VPT solution completes it all automatically, at the push of a single button. And the coated stents satisfy all the requirements of radiopacity and bio-compatibility, without compromising their desirable (and necessary) elastic qualities.
